Web 101: What Is Google Plus?

If you tried Google Plus when it first launched in 2011, you’ll be forgiven for seeing it as a waste of time. That said, in the last year or two, Google Plus has really come into its own — not because it’s changed much, but because it seems Internet users have finally figured out a use for it.

What is Google+?

Google+ is one of the biggest social networks in the world. If you have a Gmail address, or a YouTube account, you probably have a Google+ profile already.

Who uses Google+?

We do, so you should come and say hi!

If you discount the people who are using Google+ because they have to (so they can comment on a YouTube video, for example) then you’re left with a surprisingly dedicated user-base, made up primarily of bloggers, marketers, social media experts, and people who work in the technology industry.

Why should you care?

We did a post a while back on why you should be using Google+, so you might want to read that first. Here’s a quick recap:

  • With a Google+ local business page, your reviews and business details will show up in Google searches. Link your business profile to your website and you’ll be more discoverable in searches.
  • If content plays a big part in your online marketing campaign, Google+ is an ideal place to share it with a global audience. There are plenty of active communities on Google+, and a lot of them are really big.
  • Google Hangouts can be used for more than just video-chatting with friends. Hosting Q&As or live events can help you build strong relationships with customers, and is also a good way to get feedback on your products and services.
Is Google+ good for marketing?

See above. Obviously, some companies will have more success with Google+ than others, but even if you don’t use it as regularly as Facebook or Twitter, you still need an account. For the Google juice, if nothing else.
