Borders are being blurred across the indie publishing spectrum these days, as the DIY digital revolution redefines what it means to be a “professional author.” Just like mainstream methods of reaching one’s target audience have drastically changed over the past few years, so too have the once restrictive perimeters of genre. Since all the old rules are being broken and reinvented, why confine yourself to just one category – even within a single book?

Let’s face it: reading demands a lot of work from the consumer. People’s attentions spans are shrinking along with overall book sales. However, there are enough books still selling – even by indie authors – to provide enough evidence that the literary industry is still alive, if not exactly kicking like visually oriented entertainment, from video games to television to movies. Rule number one for keeping readers on the hook in this cerebral medium? Don’t bore them with unnecessary details…
