The internet is a wonderful vehicle for education. The ability to learn about any subject that we choose from the comfort of our own homes is one of the most significant benefits that the internet has brought to ordinary people. A corollary to this is the fact that anyone with a passion for a particular subject can now share that passion with the world. For those of us who are enamored with science, this is something that we don’t just want to do. It is something that we view as being extremely important to the advancement of all the various fields.

Write about science on your website!

Writing about science is something that any true scientist will relish the opportunity to do, but it isn’t an easy thing to do to a high standard. Even if the author has a deep understanding of their subject matter, they will still need to give due consideration to how they can make sure that the work they produce is easy to read and enjoyable for its audience, who will likely include scientists and non-scientists alike.

Here are some words of advice on writing compelling science articles for your website, which will help you to broaden your audience while providing a valuable resource to those who want to learn the most.

Cite Your Sources
It is always important when communicating science that you do everything you can to show your audience that you understand the subject and that you are providing them with established, justifiable assertions rather than your own opinion. To do this, you should cite other, reputable, sources for the information. If, for example, you are producing an article about Beryllium uses in everyday life, then demonstrate each of your asserted uses by linking to a source that discusses the use.

Know Your Audience
Those of us who have formally studied science at degree level will have an in-depth knowledge of the subject. For example, a physics student knows the importance of math in demonstrating that our theories about the universe around us are true. Math is the objective language that we use to prove that physics is true, however, the average reader doesn’t want to wade through mathematical formulae, much less work through them themselves.

It is important to understand what your audience wants and expects from your science articles so that you can make sure that you are doing everything you can to meet those expectations. Don’t write in a way that is overly complicated, but also, don’t dumb it down so much that your audience finds you patronizing.

Make it Relevant
One of the most important techniques that science writers should always be looking to employ is in making abstract facts and ideas relevant to the average person. It is all very well discussing the laws of thermodynamics, but this is an abstract subject. To make it relevant to a general reader, you should discuss how thermodynamics is used in their everyday lives, for example, how their food cooling down is a demonstration of thermodynamics in action.

Writing compelling science articles is an excellent way to draw traffic to your website while also indulging your own passions and sharing your knowledge with the world. This is something every scientist should aspire to!
