Who Are You? Making the Most of LinkedIn

Unless you’re actively job-hunting (or head-hunting) you probably don’t have much use for that LinkedIn account you set up a while back “just in case.” But like all social networks, LinkedIn is all about connecting – which is why you shouldn’t ignore it.

Though it’s a professional social network, LinkedIn allows room for you to offer up more than just your resume. It’s a snapshot of your professional life, the foundation of your public reputation, and then some. It also doesn’t require constant attention – set it up well and then pop in regularly to maintain and it’ll just keep working for you.

You want to make full use of your headline and summary to draw people in, so they want to read more and connect. Putting “Attorney at Law” under your name may be factual, but it’s far from interesting. “Seeker of Justice?” Now that’s someone I want to know more about.

Don’t be afraid to have a personality. Professional doesn’t automatically mean stuffy and serious.

That goes for your summary as well. It’s your first impression, so don’t waste it. All they need to know about your job skills is listed under “Experience.” Use the summary to tell them who you are and what you’re about. Things to include:

  • Personal anecdotes or your philosophy about the work you do
  • Notable achievements they don’t want to miss
  • What you’re looking for – professional connections, a new career, additional members on your team
  • Call to action and contact info
If you don't feel comfortable crafting your own summary, hire a ghostwriter (unless, of course, writing is one of the skills you are touting). Be sure to proofread thoroughly before posting. Nothing looks worse than someone who claims to be “detail oriented” missing a bunch of typos in their profile.

Roman philosopher Seneca said, “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” So get prepping so that when opportunity comes knocking it won’t be able to look past your amazing profile. And remember, we're here if you get stuck.
