Web 301: Social Media Tips for the Holidays

Whether you’re prepared for it or not, the holiday season is upon us. A lot of people are in vacation mode already, even while at the office — in the run-up to Christmas, every day is a Friday. While your mind is probably on the personal (and perhaps professional) events that you have to attend over the next few weeks, it’s as important as ever to keep yourself out of trouble. Here are five ways to keep your eye on the ball without ruining the festivities (or working TOO hard):

Download Your Social Apps

Nobody is expecting you to continue your usual level of social activity over the holidays, but you can’t afford to forget about it, either. Schedule your posts while you’re still working, and then use mobile apps to check up on posts over the holidays. With Twitter, you can have several accounts signed in at once. For Facebook, the "Pages" app is not necessary, but it does help. For G+ you'll need Google My Business.

Make sure that any links work, images have displayed properly, and check on your comment threads occasionally to ensure there’s no drama. Avoid your computer as much as possible — if you can do it from your smartphone, you’re less likely to get distracted and neglect your family or guests.

No Drunken Messages

It’s Christmas day, and after several glasses of wine you might decide your customers need to know just how thankful you are for their support. Don’t do it. Decide to do it in the morning. If you still feel the same way, you’ll at least be in a state to express yourself respectably. If you can't trust yourself to have your phone in one hand and a glass of wine in the other, put your phone somewhere you won't be tempted to use it (or, y'know, put the wine down).

No Romantic Confessions

If you’ve been watching Love, Actually or Bridget Jones’ Diary and are now feeling a little bit lonely, it might be tempting to message that cute co-worker or employee and make your feelings known. Wait until you’re sober and the effects of the rom-com have worn off. Send any bold messages on Christmas or New Year’s Eve and people will assume you’re drunk — even if you’re not.

Listen Offline…

When you work with social media, it’s easy to forget how other people see your favorite platforms. Spending time with family members can open your eyes to new perspectives — and these can make for fantastic blog posts in the New Year. Your niece might offer some clues as to the latest social craze, or your father-in-law’s explanation as to why he doesn’t “get” social platforms could raise some valid points.

 …And Listen Online

It takes seconds to check Twitter, and if you’re monitoring your profiles as suggested in the first point, you’re going to be doing it anyway. If anything interests you, or could provide you with content or inspiration for future posts, save the link to a note-making app like Evernote and revisit it when you’re back at the office. You’ll thank yourself in January when you’re struggling to reboot your brain and come up with an idea for your blog!
