Gartner has recently highlighted the top 10 strategic IoT technologies and patterns that will drive digital business innovations, enable new revenue streams and business models between the period of 2018 and 2023. Artificial Intelligence Gartner says we will be using 14.2 billion connected things in. By 2012, the total will reach 25 billion with generating a great volume of data. IoT is powered by data which enables an organization to realize the true means of implementing IoT solutions. With AI, IoT goes a step ahead. We will see AI being applied to an extensive range of IoT information, such as network traffic activities, sensor data, speech, video, still images, and speech. Nevertheless, there will be some difficulties in AI by 2023 as many IT vendors are still developing the right AI solutions supporting IoT devices and software. But despite, AI will be applied to an extensive range of IoT setups. Eliminating biases With IoT to become prevalent in different industries, there will certainly be different social, legal and ethical issues too. Key ones of them include data ownership, deductions made from it, privacy, regulation compliance etc. An IoT solution, despite beginning technically effective, is only known successful when it’s socially acceptable too. So, before an IoT strategy is actualized, it’s required to be reviewed by the ethics council of a business. External consultants can be employed to review and spot potential biases in the IoT strategy. Data buying and selling A survey conducted by Gartner last year showed 35 percent of all respondents were selling or had plans to sell data that their products and services collected. Seeing this monetization practice, data is a strategic business asset to be recorded in the accounts of a company. Doubtlessly, data is a valuable asset. The whole IoT concept depends on the data. We will see that by 2023, data buying and selling will become an essential portion of many IoT systems. Get ready to adopt Intelligent Mesh We are already experiencing a shift from centralized and cloud to edge architectures. A lot of applications are being built around it. But this isn’t the endpoint. Layers associated with edge architecture will evolve further and turn into a more structured architecture termed as intelligent digital mesh. It’s more flexible, intelligent, and responsive for IoT systems, but its cost is a bit higher. IoT Governance With IoT becoming more prevalent, we will also need to have policies governing it to ensure appropriated behavior in the development of IoT software and hardware, storage, and information use and deletion. Organizations investing in IoT are required to have proper education for the governance issues and about the staff and technologies that will handle governance. New Sensor arriving The sensor market will continue to evolve through 2023. We will see new sorts of sensors being introduced to the market. These sensors will be able to sense a wider range of events. Also, the price of current sensors will fall, triggering more and more IoT devices and IoT application development projects being launched. Reliable hardware and core software Many surveys conducted by Gartner have already shown that security is the key concern for organizations deploying IoT systems. This is why because organizations aren’t able to have control over the kind of software and hardware being used in IoT projects. But by 2023, it’s anticipated that things in the Internet of Things will be aligned in a way that creates a trustworthy environment for IoT systems. New IoT UX IoT is created with a wide range of technologies and design techniques which work together to deliver the user experience. Four key factors that drive IoT include new sensors, new algorithms, new experience architecture and context, and socially aware experiences. UX designers will require inclusively exposing themselves to these four factors if they want to create a superior UX for IoT systems. New silicon chips For now, most of the IoT endpoint devices are based on conventional process chips. But traditional instructions and memory architectures do no completely suit all the tasks performed by endpoint devices. It’s expected that by 2023, new special-purpose chips will cut-down the power consumed to run a DNN. This will also support new sort of capabilities like data analytics integrated with sensors, and speech recognition. New wireless networking for IoT IoT needs wireless networking which balances a lot of things like endpoint cost, network bandwidth, power consumption, connection density, operation cost, service quality, and range. There is no single technology that can be optimized for all of them. With new networking technologies, businesses applying IoT to their products/services will have an additional choice of flexibility. We will see how developers exploit capabilities of 5G, the next generation of low earth satellites, and backscatter networks.
