One of the oldest bits of writing advice out there is “Write what you know” – which is a little gem from Mark Twain, who I think we can agree knew what he was talking about. A little twist on that, and a great way to offer up authentic, passionate posts, is to write what you love.
Here are five bloggers doing just that: Jenni - Story Of My Life After graduating with a communications degree, and “essentially a housewife” as she puts it, Jenni poured her passion for writing into creating a blog. She even made some money at it, but ultimately her second love, photography, bloomed into a career and became her primary focus. Storytelling is the thread that ties the two together, and while it may not be as frequently, she continues to blog about life, photography and writing. She says, “[Blogging] really helped me come into myself, if you will, and opened up a world of creativity and friendship that never existed for me before.” Keep following the love, Jenni. Mara - A Blog About Love “I’m on a mission, and I couldn’t be happier about it,” says Mara, a blogger committed to helping others find a happier way to live a “life motivated by love.” Like so many others, Mara was struggling through life – “surviving,” she says – as she dealt with infertility, divorce, and life in the big city (New York). When she met someone who taught her a new way of thinking and living she knew she had to share it. She thought about writing a book, but she had so many ideas she didn’t want to hold in for that long. So she started a blog. Now she and her new husband Danny share the mission of helping others in the dark places they once were in. “I’m not writing this blog for me,” she say. “I’m writing it for you, whoever you are. Because maybe you are ‘me’ 5 years ago, and you need someone to show you a better way to live, just like someone showed me.” What a way to pay it forward. Sherry & John - Young House Love What happens when two newlyweds with a passion for DIY home projects start blogging about their first home renovation? Well, in Sherry & John’s case, a LOT happened over the course of seven years. In addition to having two children, the couple renovated two more houses, wrote two books (the first of which was a New York Times best seller, the second comes out this October), created their own lighting collection, created a line of hooks at rails that sold exclusively at Target, among other things. What started as a fun little hobby has turned into an empire. And all they did was share what they loved. Bailey Jean - Brave Love “I believe that I was created by my Creator to create and that He has put beauty in the world to bless His children. This little blog is where I hope to share some of that beauty with each of you!” Bailey Jean’s words make the purpose of her blog clear, and she shares the beauty she finds in the Divine in numerous ways. Her Faith is a steady topic, as are Theatre, Inspiration, Everyday Life and spotlights on others called “Be You Bravely.” So many types of love to blog about. Jenny - Dinner: A Love Story Jenny, a working mother of two, knows what it’s like to try to get a home-cooked meal on the table amidst all the other craziness that life has to offer. This isn’t like when GOOP’s friend tells you to get a weekly blow-out (though we still love her) – this is a woman who GETS IT. As she says, “Believe me, I know! Your kids refuse to eat anything, your fridge is full but your brain is blank, you don’t know how to cook, you have no desire to cook, you have a big project due tomorrow, you have no help with the cooking or the planning, you can’t even get everyone seated at the table at the same time, let alone eating the same meal.” But she loves food, and family, and inspiring others. There’s no guilt in Jenny’s blog, just a hope that you’ll “stay in the game.” She’s got your back as long as you do. Blogging success can be an elusive beast. The only thing you can control is what you write about, how often you write, and how well you share it (ya GOTTA do that if you want readers). The rest is really out of your hands.
