Social Spotlight – Sterling Social Examples

4/3/2015

Whether you’re just getting started with social media as a marketing tool, or need a little fresh inspiration, you can check in here each week for a dose of what’s good (or bad) in the social sphere.

This week social gets so Mad, it’s Furious.
Fast & Furious Campaign Wins Fan Support with Sensitivity

When Fast and Furious franchise star Paul Walker was killed in an automobile accident in November of 2013, the film’s production team knew they had a special challenge on their hands with regards to the as-yet-unreleased seventh part of the mega-popular series. They asked their 300 million (plus) fans on social media for guidance, and with their blessing used footage shot before the tragic accident, and movie magic to fill in the gaps. The SXSW preview was well-received, and the rest of the world can see the final results today as the film opens for wide release.

Don’t Be Fooled – Mad Men Is a Social Media Exception, Not the Rule

Given that it’s a show set in the advertising world (albeit it in the pre-Internet age), it’s surprising that Mad Men, now in its final season, never became a social media sensation like The Walking Dead. Sure, there’s social buzz now that the series is about to end, but it’s never quite been a show that people live tweet. And that’s partly by design, as the show’s marketing strategies have been fairly traditional. It’s an undeniable success, though – so does that mean you don’t need social media marketing after all? Hardly. Some shows just get lucky.
