Humor & Looking Foolish Catches Teens' Eyes

People of all ages enjoy a good laugh, which is why so many brands use humor in their marketing. But how do teens feel about ads that are - or are trying to be - funny? 

​Actually, teens hates ads in general, so injecting a little humor makes them more bearable and is a good strategy, as is another trend I've noticed lately: advertisements based off what's going around the Web at the moment, i.e., piggy-backing off the latest popular Vine or meme. 

The trouble with this, however, is the ad is only as relevant as the trend itself. Viral videos come and go at the drop of a dime nowadays, so ads based off of them may be extremely popular for only as long as it takes for the next viral video to come along and make the last one forgettable.

An alternative to this is making an ad that IS a viral video. Easier said than done, right? A good plan of attack is to contact already famous Viners or YouTubers as spokespeople. You want to advertise your new makeup line? Contact a Viner getting lots of hits for her makeup tutorials. You want to let people know about your new video game? Send one to a top YouTuber who does video game commentary. 

Anything but a typical boring ad that pops up and interrupts whatever is already on the screen can be effective with teens. And don't worry about looking stupid - we kind of love that, actually. 

Another good way to advertise is to do giveaways. (Broke teens love free stuff!) It's pretty common to see a photo of a product on Instagram with #*entercompanyhere*giveaway. With people reporting the picture constantly, others are bound to click on your company's Instagram and check it out. This also goes for people retweeting a picture from a company. If you're willing to do an actual giveaway, it's a really effective marketing strategy.
