For most people, January is a month of optimism and motivation — well, the first half is, at least. Keeping that sense of positivity can be difficult, especially when your new business is competing with the big sales and big campaigns of its larger, more established competitors.
But don’t panic — there’s a way through this. Here’s how not to be intimidated, outshone by, or pushed aside by the bigger fish in the pond helping your new business in the new year.
Focus on your brand. This might sound easy, but it’s even easier to get caught up in what other businesses are doing. If your competitors are advertising huge discounts that you just can’t afford to match, advertise something else — like your customer service, or the quality of your products. As Don Draper says in Mad Men: Don't shout louder. If another company in your field has recently had some luck with a viral ad, it can be tempting to just make more noise on social media yourself. Don’t. Quality will always win over quantity, and spamming your followers with the same tweets over and over will put you at an even bigger disadvantage. Focus on making your next campaign the best it can be, but don’t panic and change what you’re currently doing just to compete. A rushed campaign looks unprofessional, so give yourself time to perfect it first. Play the “small business” card Being a small business doesn’t have to be a weakness. You can turn it into a strength — after all, it’s an advantage that big corporations will never have over you. Why? Because people like supporting local businesses. It makes them feel good about themselves. Small businesses tend to have more time for their customers, too. Don’t be afraid to use this. And most of all?
(Yes, I know that’s overused, but for once, it’s actually relevant.)
