Give yourself permission to take your business seriously enough to know that it won’t be made or broken by you not following back every single person who follows you.

You know how on every reality competition show there’s always one person who boldly declares, “I’m not here to make friends!”?  What doesn’t always work out so well in Reality Competition Land is sometimes the right approach when it comes to social media marketing.

But wait – it’s social media. Doesn’t that by definition mean I am here to make friends, build relationships and return follows in kind?

Not necessarily.

Building relationships is important, yes, but friending or following-back every person who follows you will only get in your way.

It’s easy to jump on the follow-back bandwagon in your early days on the social media flavor-of-the-month. It’s exciting and new, you want people to like you, you want people to talk to – we get it. But reciprocation isn’t a must when it comes to social media and business. In fact, it’s a detriment.

Here’s why:
  • With hundreds of irrelevant posts clogging your feed, you won’t get to see the stuff you need and want to see
  • Anyone following you just to get a follow-back isn’t going to give you their business – they’re just in it for the numbers to (misguidedly) help themselves
  • They’re not going to interact and help your business gain traction

This is a rare situation where following the lead of your favorite celeb is advised. Just imagine Shemar Moore trying to follow-back every person who follows him – ludicrous! But his fans don’t expect that, and that’s the key. They want what he has to offer. And all they want in return is to be able to keep tabs on him while he offers it.

Give yourself permission to take your business seriously enough to know that it won’t be made or broken by you not following back every single person who follows you.

Go for quality over quantity – if you’re better able to connect with and serve your customers, you’ll end up with even more in the long run.
