by Olivia Collins What do you call a company that capitalizes on the current desire for personalization among social users, and the trend of expressing oneself in tiny pictures called emojis, by combining the two? Brilliant, that's what.
You could also call them Bitmoji, as in, the same people who brought us Bitstrips - the addictive, me-centric comic strips that seemed to take over social media for a while there. Bitmojis hold similar appeal in a smaller package.
Rather than sifting through a bunch of yellow circles with different facial expressions, you can make the emojis look like you. You start off by creating your character to imitate everything about you from the shape of your nose, to what clothes you like to wear. If you already have a Bitstrips account, your avatar already exists - though you can change it if you want to. After this is done - the fun part comes.
You can use Bitmojis to say almost anything. There are expressions ranging from your Bitmoji holding out their arms saying “I love you this much”, to your Bitmoji holding up their middle finger if you’re in a bad mood. It’s possible to have entire conversations using Bitmojis.
The app’s success is due to how personal it feels. What’s more personal than a cartoon version of yourself relaying messages? Probably nothing, but just in case you bore easily Bitmoji is smart enough to offer occasional themed Bitmojis to further appeal to consumers' interests. The latest theme they incorporated was Game of Thrones after the popular television show. They also have X-Files, Star Wars, Zoolander, Terminator, and Alice in Wonderland theme packs. Offering these themes isn't just fun, it's a smart move: Bitmoji fans are exposed to shows that might not otherwise be on their radar, and fans of the shows/movies are turned onto Bitmoji as well. If I’m a fan of Game of Thrones and keep seeing a friend's Bitmoji of herself on a throne of swords, I'm gonna need to know where she got it. Emojis are a fun way to communicate, and Bitmoji's personal touch makes them even better. Have you checked them out? Tweet us your Bitmoji when you do! IMAGE CREDIT: LAURA GILCHRIST
