CLICK TO TWEET! Most famous celebrities are very good at self-promotion: Kim Kardashian, Taylor Swift to name but two. Kim has made a career out of blatantly promoting her life online. She may be shameless, but you can’t fault her and her family for making the most of the social media revolution. So, what is the best way to promote yourself and your skills online without coming across as a narcissistic? It takes a certain skill-set to get ahead in the world of business. An online MBA degree will help open doors, but if you don’t have a master’s degree, you need to start practicing the art of self-promotion as much as possible, as it’s the only way to get yourself noticed in a competitive marketplace. Talk about Your Achievements Don’t be shy – tell the world about the great things you do. For example, if you have enrolled on an AACSB online MBA at D’Amore-McKim School of Business, give yourself a big shout out on social media and make a point of telling your boss at the earliest opportunity. It could win you a promotion, or at the very least, some extra time off to study. Join In Discussions Instead of taking a backseat in meetings and discussions on LinkedIn or Twitter, join in and make your point. This is a golden opportunity to let people know your opinions and highlight the issues you care about, professionally as well as personally. Update Your Achievements Keep a running list of your achievements so you can call upon them when you are called into a job evaluation or a chat with your boss. This is especially useful if you are hoping for a raise. Be Active on Social Media Use social media to your advantage. Bragging about your achievements isn’t a good idea, but you should talk about projects you have worked on and anything where you can honestly say you made a difference to the outcome. Recruiters look for things like this when they head hunt new employees, so be active on Twitter and LinkedIn and spend time building a valuable network. Be Nice Always treat others how you would prefer to be treated. It is never a good idea to trample over others on your way to the top, as sooner or later karma will come back and bite you. Be nice to your colleagues and treat them with respect. That way they will talk kindly of you to others. Know your worth and don’t be afraid to tell others how valuable your contribution is. If your CEO is happy that a new business system has saved person-hours and therefore money, don’t let your manager take the credit – let your boss know it was your idea!
